Guest Speakers: Victoria Espinel, Tarika Barrett, and Female Leaders in Congress

July 14, 2021

Software.org’s first partner engagement activity of the year started with Victoria Espinel (President, Software.org) and Dr. Tarika Barrett (CEO, Girls Who Code) welcoming a distinguished panel of four guest speakers – U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (West Virginia), Congresswoman Deborah Ross (North Carolina’s 2nd District), Congresswoman Chrissy Houlahan (Pennsylvania’s 6th District) , and Congresswoman Jennifer Wexton (Virginia’s 10th District).

Each Member of Congress shared about their respective career backgrounds and discussed the work they are doing in Congress to advance, inspire and empower women in STEM. Following the introductory remarks, Girls Who Code students had the opportunity to ask questions directly to our guest speakers, which led to a highly interactive discussion on topics ranging from how to stand out in college applications to hearing from the Congresswomen about their biggest career risks.

Thank you to Victoria and Dr. Barrett for moderating this special event and to Senator Capito and Reps. Ross, Houlahan, and Wexton for your inspiring stories and insights. And a big shoutout to all the girls for being so enthusiastic and asking amazing questions!
