Connecting the Dots

Software.org Leads Congressional Staff Trip to San Francisco on AI and Digital Transformation

Software.org: the BSA Foundation recently led an educational trip to San Francisco for a delegation of senior congressional staff. The trip provided a behind-the-scenes look at artificial intelligence (AI) innovations and the important roles they play throughout the economy and society.

The delegation had the opportunity to engage with technologists, business leaders, and experts at leading software companies, including Adobe, Autodesk, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce, SAP, and Unity Technologies.

AI was the primary focus of each visit, with host companies showcasing real-world applications ranging from architecture and construction, entertainment, financial services, government solutions, health care, manufacturing, retail, and more. Companies discussed how they have approached important ethical and risk considerations such as content integrity, data security, privacy, transparency, and unintended bias as they develop new products and services.

Special dinner programs featured interactive group discussions among stakeholders from academia, business, and government. The first dinner delved into the promise of AI in health care, featuring experts from Oracle, Stanford University School of Medicine, and Sutter Health. The second discussion focused on harmonizing global perspectives on AI, engaged with global policymakers, representatives from the Salesforce ethical AI team, and the UK Embassy who updated participants on the upcoming AI Safety Summit and coordination among the international community.
